2019 ZDIN – (Center for Digital Innovations Lower Saxony) Role: Proposal-writing, Coordination of future labs, Funded: MWK, 2019, www) The ZDIN is a central point of contact for the industry and public for the topics of digital transformation and AI consisting of six Future-labs. The Future-lab “Work and Society” deals with the consequences of digitization for the work environment and organization.  The Future-lab “Production” is concentrated on methods of intelligent manufacturing.

2019 IIP-Ecosphere (Role: Proposal-writing, Project-management, Funded: BMBF 2019, www) The aim of IIP-Ecosphere is to research and develop an ecosystem connecting all actors of smart manufacturing and to enable AI-based solutions in this area.
2017 AMA – Applied Machine learning Academy (Role: Proposal-writing, Project-coordination, Funded: BMBF 2017-2019, www) The aim of AMA is to research Machine Learning in modern manufacturing (Industrie 4.0) and to develop education methodologies for Engineers in applied ML.
2016 Stars4All (Role: Teamleader, Funded: H2020, www) This project was concerned with light pollution in cities. In this scope, we developed gamification based human computation (citizen science) methods and dashboards to monitor the situation in European cities. Findings were presented in Semantic Web Journal and CSCW conferences in 2017
2015 eLabour (Role: Proposal-writing, Funded: BMBF, www) The aim of this project was to develop research infrastructure and a competence center in the area qualitative research archives
2014-2015 Qualimaster (Role: Technical leader, Funded: FP7, www) This research project was focused on risk analysis, situation, and evolution monitoring in the financial domain. In this project, algorithms combining economic and social web data processing were developed to run on a storm cluster and to provide financial experts with personalized situation overview in financial markets. The project was carried out by a consortium of three European Universities and two industrial partners. A publication in CIKM 2015 on social network extraction was published in the context of this project.
2012-2015 Re-SozIt (Role: Teamleader, Funded: BMBF, www) The project with the focus on enabling intelligent access to a digital archive of qualitative data in the form of worker interviews observing the situation in German automobile and shipyard industry, collected over the last 50 years. During the project acquisition, I was working on the data anonymity related part of the proposal. The “Workive” platform incorporating faceted search for the archive was developed within this project, and it is well accepted by the corresponding sociological community. A follow-up project “E-Labour” acquired with my active participation is building on the outcomes of “Re-SozIt” (description is above).
2010-2012 IT-Ecosystems (Role: Teamleader, Funded: NTH, web: www) This project was founded by Lower Saxony Ministry for Education and focused on the infrastructure development for smart cities and on solutions for smartphones. One of the demonstrations developed in the context of this project was published and presented at the ICDE conference in 2011. In the context of this project and his Ph.D. area,, Sergej published research work on privacy-oriented (visual and textual) content analysis based on machine learning techniques in SIGIR2012 and scalable content diversity analysis of large web collections in CIKM2012
2008-2010 IRIS-Forschungsinitiative Sicherheit (Role: Projectmanager, Funded: LUH, www) This University project brought researchers from different disciplines together intending to acquire third party funded projects. This initiative resulted in cooperation with several research groups across the Leibniz University and acquirement of a project “Automated Situation Estimation for Event-Driven Video Surveillance Systems” (ASEV), founded by German Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF)
2008-2009 TENCompetence (Role: WP-Leader, Funded: EU, web: www) This EU project focused on lifelong competence development involving social web and other open data sources. During this project, I developed an information management framework, “LearnWeb 2.0”. In 2011 this platform was awarded a prize by the Ministry of Lower Saxony as an outstanding contribution to academic teaching. The framework is still being maintained and serves as a platform for many applications, experiments, and demonstrations at L3S in the area of Information Retrieval. The results of the research in this context were published in the IEEE Transactions on Learning Technologies journal in 2012 and some other e-learning related journals.
